By shellbelle from finksburg, MD on 11/17/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Heavy Loads, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Had difficulty at the start. Too stiff if I tied the upper laces too tight. Once I loosened the laces, the boots fit right. I have only had time to wear them around town to break them in. I have yet to have tested them in wet or cold weather. I'm hopeful they will work out just right.
By CYE gal from Wisconsin on 11/09/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Warm Cons: Long Break-in, Slippery When Wet, Too Stiff/Not Flexible Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels half size too big Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I bought these after reading several reviews, as I had no idea where to start. I'd never done any serious hiking before but I was going on a 4-day backpacking trip in the Wind River Range in WY, and when all was said and done, the shoes held up well.
My biggest complaint is that the shoes were stiff and slipped on my heals, causing blisters every time I wore them. Mind you, I broke these in, doing at least 50 miles before the trip and many combos of socks, bandaids, athletic tape, etc., but nothing did the trick. I have really narrow feet though so maybe it's just me as most people seem to love the comfort of this shoe. A heel insert helped the best, but I still felt like my feet and the shoes just did not play well together.
I also noticed when wet, these shoes had no traction, and I ended up in the water a couple times.
All in all, per reviews, friends, etc., I made a good "guess" picking the Asolo brand but next time I would probably cheat and get day-walking shoes as the mid-weight, ankle-high shoes are just not for me.
